Drug development and model systems
This work package will involve the discovery and early development of new drug candidate molecules from laboratories in Wales. The programme will progress these early stage molecules into pre-clinical development, focusing on work in cancer model systems to generate data in support of future clinical evaluation.
As an example of work already ongoing in Cardiff, the European Cancer Stem Cell Institute (Richard Clarkson) in collaboration with the University School of Pharmacy (Andrea Brancale and Andrew Westwell) have identified a new anti-metastatic agent that is currently in pre-clinical development. The spread of tumours to vital organs such as the liver, brain and lungs, known as metastasis, is the chief reason why people die from cancer. This programme of work will advance on the fantastic progress that has already been made, ultimately aiming to take a novel anti-metastatic drug candidate into clinical trials.
